When children have completed the ‘Little Wandle’ SSP phonics programme, they will move onto the ‘Rising Stars’ reading scheme which comprises of a range of interesting fiction, non- fiction and poetry texts.

When reading these books, children are asked to undertake a number of roles which encourage them to ask questions about what they are reading; draw upon their existing knowledge of books and their own experiences; make links; and answer questions. These roles require children to think more deeply about what they are reading and encourage a higher level of engagement and understanding.

We supplement the reading scheme with a range of high quality fiction and non-fiction texts as reading for pleasure is extremely important.
