Reading Scheme

At New Ford Academy we use the ‘Rising Stars’ reading scheme which comprises of a range of interesting fiction, non- fiction and poetry texts.

When reading these books, children are asked to undertake a number of roles which encourage them to ask questions about what they are reading; draw upon their existing knowledge of books and their own experiences; make links; and answer questions. These roles require children to think more deeply about what they are reading and encourage a higher level of engagement and understanding.

Further information about these roles and short videos of these roles in action can be found under the ‘Reading roles for parents’ section of the website.

We supplement the reading scheme with a range of high quality fiction and non-fiction texts as reading for pleasure is extremely important.

A variety of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and age-appropriate texts are available for children to choose from within all classrooms.

Whilst our main priority is to improve the love of reading by providing children with the opportunity to choose their own books, teachers regularly check that children have chosen an appropriate book matched to their reading level and that they are enjoying the book.
