National Tutoring

Here at New Ford, we sought to take full advantage of the National Tutoring Funding provided to schools.

School-led tutoring is a ring-fenced grant to fund locally-sourced tutoring provision.

You could use it to deploy, as tutors:

  • Existing teaching staff
  • External resources such as private tutors or returning teachers

There is an expectation to prioritise disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils for the tutoring, but there is also flexibility to decide which pupils need the most support to help them catch up on lost learning, particularly in light of Covid disruption to education in school.

Funding 2021-2022 was allocated for around 60% of pupils eligible for pupil premium per school.  75% of the cost was subsidised in 2021/22, with settings funding the remaining 25% through other budgets, including for example from our pupil premium Funding.

In 2021-2022 New Ford was allocated funding for 74 pupils, 15 hours per pupil = 1110 Hours.

School led tutoring began on Wednesday 3rd November 2021 and we ran our National Tutoring groups every Wednesday morning at 8am for Year groups 1 to 6.

Impact 2021-2022

We carefully selected pupils according to their learning and catch up recovery needs and synchronised groups to support ease of access for families with multiple children in school. These ran as one session each week for two consecutive cycles of 15 weeks finishing in July of the school year.

Small groups of funded children, along with some additional children accessed a bespoke Tutoring group with a teacher from their year group to maximise success of this programme in school.  This meant that tutors knew the children and their needs well and tutoring was matched to both individuals and desired year group outcomes. There was a focus both on specific skills tied to current learning and pre-tutoring knowledge, in addition to gap filling key skills where these were missing because of covid disruption to their prior learning and school experiences. The precision of teaching and learning in these small groups and the increasing confidence of pupils attending all fed into this programme having a positive impact on attainment and progress.
