Household Objects from the Past

Household objects from the past

In Nursery this week, we have been learning about the past, and in particular, objects that people would have used in their homes.  To link with our topic on traditional tales, we explored what life would have been like for the three bears, living in their cottage without electricity.  We looked at lots of different artefacts and tried to work out what they were, including: a bed warming pan; a Victorian bed warmer; a wooden clothes horse; a lamp; a carpet beater; a posser that was used to wash clothes; a copper kettle, and a candle snuffer.  Some of the objects that we learned about were over 100 years old!

We talked about how we use electricity to operate our appliances in our homes nowadays.  We decided that it is much easier to do jobs in the home, now,  than it would have been in the past.

Here are some of our children's comments:

Jack - 'There's no plug.  Mine at home has a plug.'

Logan - 'It's metal.'

Madison - 'It goes in your bed.  You put water in it.'

Jack - 'It makes the bed all hot.'

Eddie - 'That's a teapot.  I have one at home.'
