Judge Fletcher
On Monday we were visited by Judge Fletcher, who came to talk to the pupils about how he became a high court judge and to assist them in holding debates about important topics! The classroom and hall were turned into court rooms, and the children had to deliver their arguments to the court room. Debates included: deforestation, homework and school uniform! It gave us a glimpse into the British Legal system and what it would like to have a career as a Solicitor, Lawyer, Barrister or Judge.
Here are some comments from our pupils about the experience:
Cooper: I liked Judge Fletcher visiting because it was really competitive and I liked how serious he was. It made me feel like I was in a real court room. He was also very kind because he did not get distracted and listened to everyone's opinions.
Du'Aa: I think Judge Fletcher was good because when we were giving our reasons about deforestation he would listen to us and not interrupt when we were talking. At the end he was saying about what we need to work on if er were every in court: like our balance of what we were saying. He said he liked the quality of our arguments and how we were arguing.
Archie: Judge Fletcher came in to have a debate about homework. We had to bounce our debate like tennis. I was for homework so I was talking about why we should have homework, but the against side would say why we shouldn't have it. We had to call Judge ' Your Honour'. Every time someone from 'for' or 'against' side stood up someone else had to say something about that reason.
Mohib - I really enjoyed the experience because it felt like a real courtroom experience when we sat on the chairs to debate and David was wearing the outfit that a judge would wear.
Heidi - I think it was really good because the judge made it feel realistic because he was dressed as a judge and he made it feel very professional.
Izzy - I liked that the judge was a real judge and he listened to our argument and he was able to summarise what we said. He was very fair.
