Learning in Action
Reception History As part of our drawing club focus, we have been learning about what Stoke-on-Trent was like in the past. We explored the pottery industry and discovered the important role of bottle kilns in firing pottery. We also learned about the job of the sagger maker’s bottom knocker! To bring our learning to life, we created our own pottery using clay and produced artistic representations of bottle kilns using a variety of different media
On Tuesday Year 3 took part in an Egyptian WOW day. The children learnt about how essential the River Nile was for food production in Ancient Egypt. They completed many exciting activities such as practicing drawing water up to water crops, looking at Egyptian artefacts, dressing up as Egyptians, writing their initials in hieroglyphics and playing the Ancient Egyptian game Mehen! What an amazing day!
Year 1 - Remembrance Day.
In Nursery this week we have been learning about Bonfire Night. We talked about the fireworks we had seen, including the different colours they were and the noises they made. We shared our thoughts, feelings and experiences and talked about how some of us celebrate Bonfire Night with our families and in the community. We learned about the firework code and how to stay safe. We produced some fabulous firework paintings using different coloured paint and a fork to make the different exploding patterns. Our adults also brought a sparkler into school and lit it outside. It was exciting to see the sparks and patterns it made in the air!
Year 3 trip to Pooles Cavern: This week Year 3 went on a trip to visit a real life cave at Poole's cavern. We discussed why and how people in the Stone Age would have used the cave and explored the purpose they used different parts of the cave for. We also learnt about the type of rock the cave is made from and how it was formed (linking with our Science topic of rocks). Finally, at the end, we tested our bravery and saw what it was like when all the lights in the cave were switched off! What an amazing day!
Year 5 - Black History Month
Year 3 - Black History Month
Year 5 Class AS, we researched Nelson Mandela’s life and the impact he had on the world. We then made our own fact files about him.
Whilst we completed the work we listened to various musical artists of black heritage.
In Year 2, we learned all about Rosa Parks and how she stood up for herself on one very normal day home on the bus. After hearing about her life and the segregations, the children designed their own bus and drew a mixture of people as passengers from all ethnicities.
Our children develop a firm understanding of chronology when learning about the past. Each class has a time line which is added to and made reference to throughout each unit in order to deepen their understanding of not only stand alone time periods but how they crossed over.
