Making Bread Rolls November 2024
The nursery children have been learning about the Litte Red Hen story. We didn't think it was fair that the animals didn't help the Little Red Hen to make some bread. We decided to help her. We made some bread rolls, we were able to eat one ourselves and we sent some off to the farm for the Little Red Hen.
To make the bread rolls we first had to add some water to the bread flour mixture. We all helped to stir the mixture with a spoon and then when it started to become more like a bread dough we were able to use our hands to squish and knead the dough.
The dough was then rolled into lots of small pieces.
Here are some of the children's comments...
'The flour feels cold and soft'
'It is hard to stir now' (when the mixture started to form a dough consistency).
'It is sticky'
'It is sticking to my fingers'
'The dough is stretchy'.
'We need to cook them before we can eat them'.
We had to wait for the dough balls to rise for forty minutes before they could be baked.
We took them up to the kitchen and asked if they could cook our bread rolls for us please.
Once they had been cooked we waited for them to cool down and then we were able to eat them. We could have butter and/or jam on our bread rolls.
They tasted delicious. We sent some over to the farm for the Little Red Hen, we hope she enjoyed them as much as we did.
