Science - STEM Ambassadors

This half term, the children in Year 6 had a very exciting visit from Physicists who work at the National Physics Laboratory!

To celebrate their 125th birthday, the scientists have taken their outreach demonstrations and exhibitions to schools across Stoke-on-Trent to explain the impact of metrology and to raise the aspirations of children in Stoke-on-Trent. We were one of the lucky schools they visited!

Reaction time experiment The children investigated whether their dominant or non-dominant hand had the quickest reflexes. They were then able to record their findings and compare these to other schools’ findings.

Weight Illusions First, the children had to sort out the objects from the lightest to the heaviest from handling them only. They then had to estimate which block was heavier before weighting them. We were all very surprised to learn that sometimes not everything is always as it seems and the most sensible conclusion isn’t always the most reliable or accurate.

A Million Ways to Measure A Cat The children discovered the various ways they could measure a cat! They discussed measuring its tail, ears and even a strand of its fur. They also found out about all the different measurements scientists could use to measure different things such as metres (m), centimetres (cm), MOL (molecules), candela (CD), kilograms (KG), Kelvin (K), seconds (S).
