Why is fluency and reading stamina important?

At New Ford Academy, reading is at the front and centre of our curriculum as it is integral in enabling our children to become successful in all areas of their learning. Our aim is to develop fluent and expressive readers who have a life-long passion for reading. Fluency in reading is crucial as it enables children to improve their reading stamina. This makes reading more enjoyable which in turn encourages children to want to read more.

We have two dedicated timetabled sessions per week to promote fluency in reading. Teachers model fluency skills through reading a variety of stories, poems and non fiction texts with appropriate expression, pace and intonation. Children are then given the opportunity to read aloud both individually and as a group to further practise these skills.

In order to become a fluent reader, it is important that children have the opportunity to read aloud. Therefore, we have set out a reading requirement for each year group for the number of times a child is expected to read to an adult at home.
