'People Who Help Us' October 2023

To tie in with our topic of 'People Who Help Us', we were lucky to have a visit from our school chef, Jade.

She came in to tell us all about her job, including where she works, what she has to wear, and which equipment she uses in the kitchen.  Jade showed us her special recipe book and a huge pot that she uses for making curries and stews.  She told us how she prepares and cooks all the meals with the rest of the catering team and how she orders all the ingredients and food.  It was really interesting and we learned that:

Jade's clothes are made from fire-retardant materials, and she wears special shoes that protect her feet from heavy or sharp objects and prevent her from slipping.  She has to keep her hair covered with a net and a hat so that it doesn't touch the food or equipment.

The catering team sometimes make between 250 and 300 cakes in one day.

Jade starts work very early when lots of us are still in bed.  It takes hours to prepare and cook all the meals.

Jade and the catering team use a recipe book so that they know how to make all the meals and which ingredients to use.

The food is delivered from lots of different places.  It is brought to school in delivery vans.
