Should the UK send its rubbish to other countries?

This week’s Wednesday assembly focused on ‘Should the UK send its rubbish to other countries?’ We learned about what happens to our rubbish when we throw it away. It goes to landfill; is incinerated; some is recycled; some is composted. We also learned that each person in the UK throws away 7 times their body weight, and that the UK sends over 800,000 tonnes of waste abroad. This is the weight of 80 Eiffel Towers! We thought about how to make better use of our waste, by recycling, donating or reselling items.

Some people believe that the UK should be dealing with their own rubbish and that it’s unfair to expect other countries to deal with it. It might affect their environment.

Others believe that we need the help of other countries to deal with our waste, and that if we pay other countries, then it’s fair. Our children voted to share their views on this question.
